KILLING TUMORS BY BLOCKING BLOOD FLOW

When it comes to the treatment of cancer, the focus is typically on eradicating the cancerous cells with chemotherapy, radiation, and surgery. However, an increasingly popular treatment option is to target the blood vessels that feed these cancerous tumors, thus limiting their growth and spread. This approach, known as anti-angiogenesis, seeks to stop the blood flow to cancerous tumors.

The idea behind anti-angiogenesis is that tumors rely on the blood vessels that feed them to grow and spread. By cutting off the blood supply, the tumor can be deprived of vital nutrients and oxygen, thus significantly reducing its growth. In some cases, the tumor may even shrink or go away completely.

The most common way to achieve anti-angiogenesis is through the use of drugs. These drugs work by blocking the proteins that help new blood vessels form. Without these proteins, the blood vessels necessary for the tumor to grow cannot form. This results in the tumor being deprived of the nutrients and oxygen it needs to sustain itself, thus preventing it from spreading.

In addition to medications, another way to achieve anti-angiogenesis is through the use of physical interventions such as radiation and surgery. For example, radiation therapy can be used to target the tumor and the surrounding blood vessels, damaging them and preventing further growth. Surgery can also be used to cut off the blood supply to the tumor. This can be done by using special clips or other devices.

Although anti-angiogenesis is becoming increasingly popular as a treatment for cancer, it is important to remember that it is not a cure. It can help to slow the growth and spread of the tumor, but it will not necessarily make the cancer go away completely. It is also important to note that there can be side effects associated with anti-angiogenesis, such as anemia or fatigue.

Overall, anti-angiogenesis is a promising treatment option for those with cancer. By cutting off the blood supply to the tumor, it can help to limit its growth and spread, thus slowing down the progression of the disease. However, it is important to remember that it is not a cure and that there can be side effects associated with the treatment.
